A dressmaker and the child of William Hobday (an ironmonger's assistant) and Elizabeth Lawrence, Ethel Hobday, the first cousin twice-removed on the mother's side of Nigel Horne, was born in Ramsgate, Kent, England in 18901,2 and baptised at Christ Church, Ramsgate, Kent, England on 1 Feb 1891.

She married Charles Fletcher in Thanet, Kent, England in Dec 19163.

During her life, she was living at St Lawrence, Thanet in 19011; at Lorne Road, St Lawrence Intra, Thanet on 31 Mar 19014; and at Bloomsbury Road, St Lawrence Intra, Thanet on 2 Apr 19115.
