An agricultural labourer and the child of John Horn (a labourer) and Mary Ann, John Horn, the third times great-uncle of Nigel Horne, was born in Margate, Kent, England in 18291,2,3, was baptised there at St John the Baptist's Church on 2 Oct 1825 and married Charlotte Spratt (with whom he had 4 children: Elizabeth, Herbert James, Alice Clara and William James) in Thanet, Kent, England c. Aug 18594.

During his life, he was living at Chapel Hill, Margate on 30 Mar 18511 and at Northdown, Margate on 2 Apr 18716.

He died c. May 1879 in Thanet2,3 and was buried at St John the Baptist's Church, Margate on 6 Jun 18793.
