A post office clerk and the 2nd of 5 children of Thomas Tunbridge (a dairyman) and Eliza Tutt (a general servant), Lily Tunbridge, the first cousin twice-removed on the father's side of Nigel Horne, was born in Hougham, Kent, England on 12 Mar 18811,2,3,4 and married Harold Oliver (a railway porter with whom she had 1 child, Frank) at Christ Church, Hougham on 8 Jun 19085.

During her life, she was living at her birthplace in 1881[1] and on 5 Apr 1891[7]; at 5 Eaton Road, Dover, Kent, England on 31 Mar 1901[6]; at 22 Clarendon Street, Dover on 2 Apr 1911[8]; and at 11 Clarendon Street, Dover on 29 Sep 1939[4].
