The child of Thomas Mount (a labourer) and Sarah Holness (a charwoman), Caroline Mount, the first cousin four-times-removed on the mother's side of Nigel Horne, was born in Herne Bay, Kent, England c. Aug 18491,2 and was married to William Payton (a brickmaker with whom she had 10 children: William E T, Ada, Charlotte H, Sarah A E, Alice M, Catherine J, Frances Louisa, Henry G, Arthur Albert and Edith D).

During her life, she was living at Mortimer Street, Herne Bay on 30 Mar 18513; at King Street, Herne Bay on 7 Apr 18614; in Herne, Kent, England on 3 Apr 18816; and in Hampton, Kent on 5 Apr 18915.
