He died in 1752 at St Lawrence, Thanet, Kent, England1,2 and was buried there on 28 Apr 17521,3.

I John Cowell of Coldwood in the parish of St Laurence, in the Isle of Thanet in the County of Kent.......... being weak in body but of sound perfect and disposing mind memory and understanding (praised be God) to make my last will and testament and considering the frailty of human nature the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the time thereof and being very willing and desirous to avoid and prevent all disputes and controversies after my demise about the estate whichthe Lord in his great mercy hath blessed me with at .... this thirteenth day of April in the twenty fifth year of t France and Ireland protector of the faith and in the year of our lord 1752
I make ordain and appoint this my last will and testament in manner and form following that to say first I most humbly commend my soul to Almighty God my maker hoping and steadfastly believing in and ........ the precious and meritorious death and burial and the glorious and triumphant resurrection and ascention of my blessed Lord and saviour Jesus Christ to receive full pardon and .............. of all my sins and transgressions and my body please to the earth to be devoutly interred at the discretion of my executors hereafter named and as to ............. and ...................all such Estate and Estates both real and personal whatever and whosoever be the same of what nature quality kind degree or sort so ever which I now all or at anytime hereafter shall be .............. and possessed of interested in or any way entitled to and which I have power to dispose of I give devise and bequeath the same as follows
I do hereby order direct and appoint that my executors hereafter named shall and do within the space of forty days next after my decease raise and procure a true and perfect inventory and appraisement to be made and taken of all and singular my goods chattels plate linen cash securities effects ...... utensils and implements of household stabling and ..... laundry tackle stock crops all other my personal estate whatever and whoever and to exhibit the same according to law inthe proper Court for that purpose. And I do hereby give and bequeath my said personal estate unto my executors hereafter named for and towardss the use and maintenance of my dear and loving wife Susanna and the maintenance education and bringing up and placing out of my children until the youngest child shall have attained his or her age of twenty one years my just simple .............. debts funeral expenses and the charges of the probate hereof and other ........... chargesin and about the due execution of this my will being thereout first paid and deducted and I do hereby give and divide the hoar and meat rent issues and profits of the Real Estate that descended and came to me on the death my late brothersMr William Cowell and Mr Joseph Cowell and that I lately purchased of John ................. fisherman after the interest of such servities as now and hereafter shall be made of the same or any part thereof the landtaxes and other outgoings are thereout half yearly or otherwise paid and deducted unto my executors and the successor of them and to the executors or administrator of such successors also for and towardss the maintenance of my said wife and also the maintenance education bringing up and placing out of my children until the youngest child shall have attained his or her said age of twenty one years old
I do hereby give divide will and bequeath unto my executors hereafter named and the successors of them and to the successors or administrators of such successors free liberty full power and absolute authority immediately forward after my daughter Susanna shall have attained her said age of 21 years to enter into and upon all the aforesaid real estates so described to and purchased by us or any part or parcels thereof and by a good and sufficient mortgage to be by them other or any of them duly made and executed in the presence of and attested by two or more credible witnesses of this same or some part or parcels thereof and thereby to liaise and levy the full sum of one hundred pounds of lawful money of Great Britain and the charges of and belonging to such mortgage besides which said sum of one hundred pounds when levied shall be paid by the person or persons who levied the same unto my said daughter Susanna within one week after she hath attained her said age of twenty one years she giving at her own expense a good and sufficient release and discharge to the persons or person who shall pay her the same to be done according to law to hold the said real estates or any part or parcels with their or any of their app...... for and during the time and term of five hundred years to commence from the date next before the day of my decease and be determinable upon my sons repayment thereof with the charges of and belongingto such mortgages and of such assignment or assignments as shall (in the meantime) be obliged to be made thereof also ..... and when the youngest child that I now have or shall have by my said wife shall have attained his or her said age of twenty one years then I do hereby give and divide the .......... hoar and meat rents and profits of my said real estates so responded to and purchased by me as aforesaid unto my said wife and to her assigus for and during the time and term of her natural life she first paying all the interest of such servities as shall have been thou duly made of the same or any part or parcels thereof the land taxes and other outgoings half yearly or otherwise according to the usual .....of interest taxes and other outgoings being paid and payable and when the youngest child that I now have or shall happen to have by my said wife shall have attained his or her said age of twenty one years and my said daughter Susanna is paid as aforesaid and my said wife is dead and her reasonable funeral expenses are paid and satisfied out of such of my household goods as she may happen to have and le.. at the time of her decease but if they are not sufficient to bury her then the deficiency thereof shall be made up out of the said hoar and meat rents ........and profits of my said real estates by my six sons hereafter named equally then I do hereby give and divide the rest of the said household goods (if anyleft) and also all the aforesaid real estates............ and purchased as aforesaid and every part and parcel thereof with their each and every of their app.............. The before registered will of John Cowell deceased was proved the twenty eighth day of May 1753 before the Reverend Thomas Samprey .......... surrogate to the worshipful Edward Simpson doctor of laws official general to the archdeacon of Canterbury lawfully constituted by the oath of Edward Cowell one of the executors named in the said will being first sworn duly to perform the same ..... power ..... to the other executor.
